The artist we all know as Prince, famous musician and 80’s pop sensation, is being sued by Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc., the producer of his first fragrance, 3121. According to the law suit filed November 17 with the New York State Supreme Court, Prince and his record label, Universal, are being sued for breach of contract concerning marketing agreements made by the record label. The law suit said:

“Since July 2007, despite repeated attempts by Revelations there have been virtually no communications from anyone who could commit to or coordinate any promotional efforts by Prince.”

3121, named after Prince’s 2006 album, was released by Revelations in July 7, 2007 with an eventful launch including a performance by Prince and 7% of net profits going to 7 charities (all a play on numbers, 7 being the sum of 3121).

“3121 is a white floral scent that opens with a refreshing sparkle of crisp bergamot, opulent jasmine and gardenia. Orange flower and muguet sensually intertwine with tuberose and ylang ylang, creating a subtle, mysterious blend; evolving into notes of patchouli and creamy sandalwood. Precious cedarwood and luxurious musks complement this sexy scent with an almost surreal draw that tugs at all senses for total captivation.” (Revelations press release)

Reviews seemed to be mixed, and not expecting too much from a celebrity perfume even though he was said to have been completely involved in the creation. Some said it wasn’t as sexy as they would expect from Prince. Others said it was an OK white floral, but couldn’t compete with other white florals out there. Regardless, Revelations doesn’t seem too satisfied with sales, because they’re blaming it’s failure on Prince’s lack of cooperation. They even had another fragrance planned to come out in 2009 in their contract. I’m guessing he’s not going to be collaborating on this one though. Maybe the picked the wrong celebrity?!
